Shaws sales and coupon matchups - 12/11-12/17

You may have noticed that the Shaw's circular this week includes a coupon for the "Pick 4 for $19.99" sale - I just want to say how much I DISLIKE this promotion when it happens, it's so rare that the stuff included in the sale is actually worthwhile. Here's the thing: you are paying $5 per item - so unless you're getting at LEAST 3-5 pounds of meat, it's not really a deal. If you decide to go for it, here are the guidelines I'd use:
**Perdue Roasting chicken - 5lbs or more only (avg $1/lb)
**Fresh ground beef - 2.5 lbs or more (avg $2/lb)
**Fresh Ground turkey - 3lbs or more (this says it's for 3lb package - $1.66/lb)
**Frozen Chicken leg quarters - 10 lb bag ($0.50/lb - GREAT DEAL)
**Perdue Breaded chicken - 32 oz bag use $1/1 Perdue coupon from 10/18 RP

Nothing else on their list meets my criteria - I'd suggest stocking up on the leg quarters and ground turkey.

UPDATE: Went to my store today - when I asked where the Perdue chickens were, they showed me but said they weren't stickered with the "pick 4" label because they were "over the weight limit" and the register would just take $5 off my total order. WHAT??? I asked to speak with a store manager, who said they would honor the sales flyer regardless of the price (apparently they received the wrong chickens, but as he said, "that's our problem, not yours"). BUT YOU MAY RUN INTO A PROBLEM. If you do, have a sales flyer with you and point out the following:
- The exact wording states "pay only $19.99 for 4 packages in a single transaction REGARDLESS OF INDIVIDUAL PACKAGE PRICE". They cannot impose their own rules about weight limits or price caps.
- The flyer makes NO mention of restrictions, "while supplies last" or "limited quantities". So if they don't have the product you want, you CAN ask for a rain check.

They also have a P&G catalina deal - buy $15 worth and get $5 OYNO (about 33% off the list price). Here are some coupon matchups to sweeten that deal:

Progresso classic soup or bread crumbs - $0.99
-use $1/2 bread crumbs printable
-use $1/2 bread crumbs printable
-use $1/3 soups printable
-use $0.75/3 soups printable
-use $1/4 soups coupons from 10/25 SS, 11/8 SS, 12/6 SS

Green Giant frozen boxed veggies 7-10 oz - $0.99 (limit 6)
-use $0.60/3 coupon from 11/15 GM (may double, YMMV)
-use $0.50/2 Boxed veggies printable
-use $0.50/2 boxed veggies printable

Gold Medal Flour - $1.99
Chex Mix - $1.69
-use $0.50/1 printables here, here, and here
-use $1/2 coupon from 10/25 SS
-use $0.50/2 coupon from 11/15 GM

Other deals this week:

Boneless Chicken breast - $1.79/l

Dannon Light&Fit yogurt - 10/$4

Prince Pasta - 10/$10

Swanson broth - $0.69
-use $1/6 coupon from 11/8 SS

Chex Cereal - $1.50 each WYB 3
-use $1/2 printable here and here
-use $1/2 coupon from 11/15 GM

Woot-off at Kids.woot.com!

Ever been to a Woot-off? Bring your spurs 'cause it's a hootenanny! :) There appears to be a woot-off going on RIGHT NOW at Kids.Woot.com!

Normally, Woot is one product offered all day - but during a Woot-off, the fine folks at Woot pull out the stops and offer a different product every time one sells out - usually at FANTASTIC discounts. I've seen products for all age ranges at Kids.Woot.com, so it's worth checking back several times during the day. As of this posting, they were offering a fun shooter game for ages 5+, but I've seen Didj units, Halo sleep sacks, infant mobiles, puzzles, board games - it all depends on what's sitting in their warehouse.

Happy Wooting!

Cleanup in the cereal aisle!

Man, I have a hard time when a good deal comes along! I had read Deal Seeking Mom's post about the Kellogg's cereal deal at Target this week and had to see what I could make of it.

According to the deal, selected Kelloggs cereals were $2.66 and ALL Kelloggs cereals are buy 3, get one free. There are several links to Kellogg's Mfr coupons on the post, plus a Target store printable for $1/1 Kelloggs cereal that can be stacked! I also found a Target printable for Chex mix that could be combined with a couple of Chex mix printables from Coupons.com, and a free Pop Tarts coupon I had from an old campaign.

As it turns out, the cereals under the sale price were VERY limited - the Raisin Bran was the only one I had coupons for (my store didn't carry the Corn Flakes Touch of Honey, and the Special K cereals weren't at the sale price). But I still managed to get all of the cereal for an average price of $1.05 per box after coupons, so I'm satisfied :) Here's how it worked out:

13 Boxes Kellogg cereals (2 Corn Flakes, 1 Rice Krispies, 1 Special K Blueberry, 2Special K Cinnamon Pecan, 3 Raisin Bran, 4 Frosted Mini Wheats) - $40.83
used 10 $1/1 Target Printables
used $8.25 in various mfr printable coupons
Received 3 free boxes as part of promotion

Final cost: $13.64, or $1.05 per box!

2 bags Chex Mix, on sale for $1.75
used $1/2 Target Printable
used 2 $0.50/1 mfr printables

Final Cost: $1.50, or $0.75 each!

1 box Blueberry Muffin Pop Tarts, $2.29
used mfr coupon for a free box
Final Cost: FREE!

1 bag Goldfish crackers $1.89 (The Boy Wonder and I got a snack attack)
1 DVD Cat in the Hat animated $5.00

Grand Total: $22.03!!!

A little extra shopping...

I did a little extra shopping this week, we needed formula and I wanted to hit a few sale items at Shaw's. Before today my total spending for the month was at $119, including diapers and paper goods. I'm loosening up on my goal amount because of the need to buy formula - my new aim is for $200-$250 monthly (still a pretty good target!) I still have $80-130 for the next two weeks, based on the new goals.

When determining my budget for sale/stockpile items, I figured out what I'd need to get through the rest of the month (2 loaves bread - $2.40, 5 gallons milk - $12.00, 1 can formula - $19.99, 8 bottles soda (for hubby) - $9.12, 1 pack TP - $4.99, $10 per week allowance for fruit and veggies), which came to just under $70. That leaves me with $10-60 to play with. What I bought today includes some items on the necessity list (milk and soda were under my budgeted amounts!) and some stockpile stuff, so I'm on track to meet my goal!

I hit Shaw's, Stop & Shop and BJ's, and here were my totals (amt saved doesn't factor in BJ's regular lower prices):

Total OOP: $56.57
Total saved: $29.15
Total left for the month: $24-$74

BJ's
Gallon milk - $2.28 (actually cheaper than Price Rite!)
3 lb bananas - $1.44
Diaper Genie refill - $4.99
BJ's formula - $19.99

Total: $29.01

Stop & Shop

Reusable Grocery Bag - $0.99
free reusable bag reward loaded on my Rewards card!
Quilted Northern 9 Mega roll - $5.99
used $1/1 coupon from 10/11 RP
Stop & Shop sugar cookies - $1.00 (had a craving!)

Total: $9.98
Total Saved: $3.99 ($1.00 coupon, $2.00 store savings, $0.99 reward)
Total OOP: $6.30

Shaw's

Hotel Style turkey breast - $8.30 (on sale $0.99/lb, 8-10lb avg weight)
8 bottles soda - $7.44 (all the soda we'll need for the month!)
2 boxes Barilla Whole grain pasta - $1.76
used $1/2 coupon from 8/23 SS
2 boxes Barilla Piccolini pasta - $1.76
used $1/2 coupon from 8/23 SS
***Barilla pasta for $0.38 per box!!!

2 Coffeemate creamers 16 oz - $4.00

Total: $46.42
Total saved: $25.16 ($2.00 coupons, $23.16 store savings)
Total OOP: $21.26

Price Rite shopping trip

Ok...so this week SHOULD have been a nearly-free week...all of the week's meals were straight from the stockpile, or so I thought. Then I realized the celery was gone, and I didn't have enough potatoes to double the Sausage Potato Soup recipe...and the bread-and-milk run turned into a wee bit more. I had to get bread flour from Shaw's too (for $3.79 - OUCH!) - if anyone has suggestions for finding bread flour in bulk I'm all ears! Seems like I can only find it at the major grocery stores.

Last night hubby decided to make chocolate chip cookies with the Boy Wonder and ended up buying a pound of butter and a bag of semi-sweet chips for $3.18 - not really on the game plan but they had fun baking so I can't really complain :)

Here's what my nearly $23 got me:

1 Red pepper - $0.90
4 bottles Pepsi - $4.56 (Hey SodaStream - need another reviewer???)
4 cans biscuits - $1.52 (craving monkey bread!)
Worcestershire sauce - $0.99
Soy sauce - $0.99
1 gallon milk - $2.39
5 lb bag potatoes - $1.89
1 bunch celery - $0.99
Wheat sandwich bread - $1.19
5-pk garlic sleeve - $1.49
5 lb bag all purpose flour - $1.79
2 lb unsalted butter - $2.98
20 oz bag frozen corn kernels - $1.29

Total OOP: $22.97
Bread flour - $3.79
Cookie stuff - $3.18

Total spending for the week: $29.94
Total spending for October: $83.80

Target run - cheap applesauce and PB!

Tara over at Deal Seeking Mom posted about a great Target deal on Skippy Peanut butter this week, so I had to check it out! Between hubby and the Boy Wonder we go thru a LOT of peanut butter :) While I was there I also checked into the Mott's applesauce deal (buy 5, get a $5 gift card) to see if it was worthwhile.

The Skippy was priced at $2.04 per 16oz jar, a little higher than what other areas are finding. We also didn't get the $0.75/1 coupon in RedPlum, we had a $1/2 instead. But I usually pay $7.50 for two 40OZ jars at BJ's (about $0.09/oz) which makes a 16 oz jar about $1.50 - with the coupons I'd be paying $1 or less at Target so it was definitely worth it!

The Mott's deal was pretty great too! The sale includes the more expensive flavored/no sugar types which usually cost about $2.70 for a 6 pack, so picking those up at $1.75 (before the gift card) made for a great deal! There were also some packages marked at $1.69 but still part of the gift card promo!

Here's what I got for $25.98 (and yes, I spoiled my Boy just a wee bit, but with sale prices I can afford to!)

Transaction #1:
5 Motts applesauce 6-packs - $8.69

Total OOP: $8.69
got $5 gift card

Transaction #2
5 Motts applesauce 6-packs - $8.75

used $5 GC
Total OOP: $3.75
got $5 gift card

Transaction #3
6 Skippy 16 oz peanut butter - $2.04
used 6 $1/1 Target coupons
used one $1/2 coupon from 10/4 RedPlum

2 Toddler plates - $2
2 Toddler flatware sets - $2
2 Coffeemate 16 oz - $3.74
1 Bob the Builder DVD - $5

used $5 GC
Total OOP: $13.54

BJ's, Price Rite and Shaws Trip

I *heart* buying diapers. Really I do. I forgot how fast a newborn blazes through them, and had to run to BJ's before hubby needed to leave for work on Saturday - so I packed up the Boy Wonder and we had a fun mommy/peanut excursion! I wasn't going to hit the Shaw's but the siren song of good deals got me again :)

The Shaw's Catalina deal with Old El Paso products ($3 off meat purchase WYB 6, $1 off meat purchase WYB 3) IS still active, and includes the seasoning packets! You can buy those for about $1 apiece, making this a SWEET deal. (see my transactions below)

BJ's:
**264-count Luvs size 1 diapers - $29.99 (this works out to about 11 cents per diaper, actually BETTER than the BJ's brand size 1-2's!)
**Diaper Genie refill - $4.99
**Twin pack 40 oz Skippy Peanut Butter - $7.49
**Milk - $2.33 (anyone else notice milk prices going up again? Price Rite milk was expensive last week!)
**12-lb bag Arm & Hammer Baking Soda - $5.69 (This is actually cheaper than buying the 1-lb boxes of Price Rite brand for $0.50 each! I use it in cleaning around the house so I need a LOT)
**Coffee Mate flavored creamer 32 oz - $2.99

Total OOP - $54.09 (curse you, diapers!)

Shaw's:

Transaction #1
-Old El Paso Taco Shells - $1.50
-OEP Gordita Kit - $2.00 (Had a peelie for free seasoning WYB 2 kits!)
-2 OEP Taco seasoning - $0.67 (got one free!)
-2 OEP Salsa - $2.90

Total: $12.64
Total after sale price: $7.84
Total Coupons: $1.09
Total OOP: $6.75
Got $3 off meat purchase Catalina!

Transaction #2

-Shaw's 10 oz fresh spinach - $0.99
-5 lb tote of apples - $3.04
-2 lb yellow onion - $0.99
-5 lb Maine Potatoes - $1.99

**used free Lipton Tea coupon
-10 Gatorade 32 oz - $10
-5 Propel water 24 oz - $2.50
**used circular coupon for 5 free Propel WYB 10 Gatorade
-5 Francesco Rinaldi sauces - $5.00
-4 Ronzoni Healthy Harvest pasta - $4.00
**used 2 $1 off 2 printables
-Philly Cream Cheese - $0.99
-Coffeemate Creamer 32 oz - $3.00
-Spray N Wash stain remover - $2.99

Total: 83.15
Total Store savings: $34.30
Total Coupons: $17.16
Total OOP: $31.69

Price Rite

-Milk - $2.39
-Sugar Free Strawberry Jam - $2.49
-Butter Spread - $1.49
-Shredded cheddar 2lb - $3.99
-Wheat bread - $1.19
=3lb bananas - 1.63
-1lb broccoli crowns - $1.17
-1 green pepper - $0.50
2.2lb zucchini - $1.74

Total OOP: $18.13

That puts my monthly spending at $195.69! That included diapers for both boys and some formula, but since we were eating freezer meals those were groceries we didn't have to buy - I'm THRILLED we are under goal for the month but next month should be more typical since I'm out of OAMC meals!

Price Rite Shopping trip 9/21

I wasn't terribly impressed with the sales this week at Stop & Shop or Shaws, if I have time in the next couple of days I may scour the sales for things we can stockpile but I was able to get everything we needed for the week at Price Rite.

Our Price Rite does not accept coupons, so all prices are everyday prices. Here's what we bought:

2.77 lb zucchini - $2.74
1 head lettuce - $0.99
2 heads garlic - $0.60
2 large green peppers - $1.45
3 lbs tomato on the vine - $4.58
1 container grape tomatoes - $1.50
1.5 lb bananas - $0.74
1 lb bag carrots - $0.69
Wheat bread - $1.19
4 cans Goya chickpeas - $2.67
2 cans Goya black beans - $1.33
Gallon milk - $2.39
5 bottles Pepsi - $5.45 plus $0.25 deposit
Dozen eggs - $1.29
Int'l Delight flavored creamer - $0.99

Total OOP = $28.84

This is everything we need to complete all meals for the week, any meat and other ingredients are already in the pantry or chest freezer! So far, we've spent 91.78 on groceries and paper goods, so we're doing great this month! I will probably need diapers again before the month is out, but we should be close to budget.

I finally got out to do some Target shopping, after getting wind of a few great deal scenarios from It's Hip to Save! I did pretty well considering it was a last-minute effort.

I didn't get the Special K bars deal, they were already sold out with no rainchecks - I also passed on the bigger 12-count pop tart boxes with the free milk (the coupons for Pop Tarts that I could print were for the smaller boxes not the big ones), and instead got the 8-count boxes for an absolute steal.
