Thoughts from the outside

I've been catching up on blog reading and have thorougly enjoyed a lot of the recap posts from the Type A Mom conference...recap AND fallout, based on some of the posts I've come across. It sounds like there were a lot of valuable lessons to be learned, and I'm sorry I missed them firsthand, but appreciate to all the bloggers who are willing to share their experiences and let me live vicariously through you!

Creating PR relationships seems to have been a pretty hot topic, one I've spent too many hours turning over in my own fledgeling blogger brain. I fall into the trap of comparing myself to those I'd consider "successful" blogs, wondering what I'm doing wrong. Sometimes it puts me in a "why bother" mood. But then I come across posts like the one over at Frugal Dad about "how not to suck at.." and it reminds me of a few important things.

1. I will be the victim (or victor) of self-fulfilling prophecy. If I convince myself I'm not as good as XYZ blogger, or that I'll never be as big as Doo..whatshername, then I won't be. I'm going to reach as high as I'm willing to set my own bar. If I want the Dyson vaccum, the SodaStream fizzy drinkmaker, or the gen-yoo-wine set of Ginsu knives, I can haz that. Dammit.

2. I have a voice that is as valuable as others that are out there. In MY voice. Trisha at MomDot wrote a post today about PR Professonalism (or lack thereof), and mentioned how a particular Type A Panelist suggested certain bloggers have "earned" the right to be themselves in the blogosphere. Hah. I'm pretty sure I earned the right to be me LOOONG before any PR person knew me. I'm already made of awesome, buddy.

3. Others have valuable insight that I can learn from. If someone isn't better/faster/smarter than me, I never learn how much higher I can reach! I don't have to be sour just because I'm not blazing the trail at that moment.

4. I don't need to measure my blog's success by how many product reviews I'm doing. Heck, I don't even really need to measure it by how many hits I'm getting. I've met some pretty awesome people just because I started blogging, and learned more from them than I ever could have on my own. That makes this a pretty successful venture. (of course, if Dyson comes calling...then I MUST be a rockstar, right?)

5. I have WAY too much fun blogging to suck that bad :) Isn't that why we got in the game to begin with?

BJ's, Price Rite and Shaws Trip

I *heart* buying diapers. Really I do. I forgot how fast a newborn blazes through them, and had to run to BJ's before hubby needed to leave for work on Saturday - so I packed up the Boy Wonder and we had a fun mommy/peanut excursion! I wasn't going to hit the Shaw's but the siren song of good deals got me again :)

The Shaw's Catalina deal with Old El Paso products ($3 off meat purchase WYB 6, $1 off meat purchase WYB 3) IS still active, and includes the seasoning packets! You can buy those for about $1 apiece, making this a SWEET deal. (see my transactions below)

BJ's:
**264-count Luvs size 1 diapers - $29.99 (this works out to about 11 cents per diaper, actually BETTER than the BJ's brand size 1-2's!)
**Diaper Genie refill - $4.99
**Twin pack 40 oz Skippy Peanut Butter - $7.49
**Milk - $2.33 (anyone else notice milk prices going up again? Price Rite milk was expensive last week!)
**12-lb bag Arm & Hammer Baking Soda - $5.69 (This is actually cheaper than buying the 1-lb boxes of Price Rite brand for $0.50 each! I use it in cleaning around the house so I need a LOT)
**Coffee Mate flavored creamer 32 oz - $2.99

Total OOP - $54.09 (curse you, diapers!)

Shaw's:

Transaction #1
-Old El Paso Taco Shells - $1.50
-OEP Gordita Kit - $2.00 (Had a peelie for free seasoning WYB 2 kits!)

Total Coupons: $17.16
Total OOP: $31.69

Price Rite

-Milk - $2.39
-Sugar Free Strawberry Jam - $2.49
-Butter Spread - $1.49
-Shredded cheddar 2lb - $3.99
-Wheat bread - $1.19
=3lb bananas - 1.63
-1lb broccoli crowns - $1.17

2.2lb zucchini - $1.74

Total OOP: $18.13

That puts my monthly spending at $195.69! That included diapers for both boys and some formula, but since we were eating freezer meals those were groceries we didn't have to buy - I'm THRILLED we are under goal for the month but next month should be more typical since I'm out of OAMC meals!

Menu Plan Monday - Sept 27th, '09

Is it really almost October? Man, this year has flown by. The Boy Wonder has grown SO much, and his new little brother is already 6 weeks old! Watching the two of them start to interact over the last few days has been AWESOME...BW is enamored by the Noob's feet and toes (just like mommy!) and N's starting to recognize BW's face and smiles whenever he's in view.

I am SO looking forward to fall recipes! Apples and butternut squash should be hitting great prices, and I may pick up some sugar pumpkins so I can freeze some mashed for recipes later in the year. I'm doing my first week of all fresh-prepared meals, I found ANOTHER Spaghetti Pie and some Italian Pasta Salad in the freezer but I'll save those for after I go back to work so hubby has some goodies to fall back on when he's with the kids.

Here's what we're noshing on this week, be sure to visit I'm an Organizing Junkie for HUNDREDS more menu ideas!

monday - Burritos using leftover Obama's Chili, salad ($2.50 for 4 servings)

tuesday - Chickpea Stew over rice ($3.44 for 6 servings)

wednesday - Thai-style Chicken over rice ($4.50 for 4-5 servings)

thursday - Crockpot beef roast, veggies, homemade rolls ($7.10 for 6 servings)

friday - Beef Gorditas, corn ($5.60 for 4-6 servings)

saturday - Leftovers (FREE)

$0.37 Huggies wipes at Wal Mart

We had to run to Wal Mart to pick up some diabetic supplies for hubby, so I scanned some of the sale posts to see what I might be able to pick up while I was there - I saw Deal Seeking Mom's post that mentioned a free 40 count Huggies wipes deal with a coupon.

They were sold out of the 40-count packs, but they had the Huggies Natural Care 72-count boxes for $2.37! I used this $2 off any Huggies diaper product coupon (you can print twice) and got two boxes for $0.37 each! They also had the cartoon character boxes of wipes for $2.50.

I usually buy the BJ's brand wipes that come in resealable soft packages (nine 88-count packs for about $16), but the hard boxes are nice to have and the BJ's refills fit inside!

Price Rite Shopping trip 9/21

I wasn't terribly impressed with the sales this week at Stop & Shop or Shaws, if I have time in the next couple of days I may scour the sales for things we can stockpile but I was able to get everything we needed for the week at Price Rite.

Our Price Rite does not accept coupons, so all prices are everyday prices. Here's what we bought:

2.77 lb zucchini - $2.74
1 head lettuce - $0.99
2 heads garlic - $0.60
2 large green peppers - $1.45
3 lbs tomato on the vine - $4.58
1 container grape tomatoes - $1.50
1.5 lb bananas - $0.74
1 lb bag carrots - $0.69
Wheat bread - $1.19
4 cans Goya chickpeas - $2.67
2 cans Goya black beans - $1.33
Gallon milk - $2.39
5 bottles Pepsi - $5.45 plus $0.25 deposit
Dozen eggs - $1.29
Int'l Delight flavored creamer - $0.99

Total OOP = $28.84

This is everything we need to complete all meals for the week, any meat and other ingredients are already in the pantry or chest freezer! So far, we've spent 91.78 on groceries and paper goods, so we're doing great this month! I will probably need diapers again before the month is out, but we should be close to budget.

Stop the presses - I actually BAKED last week!

We aren't really getting much sleep these days, but the new baby is on a slightly more predictable schedule, and I felt good enough to try making a batch of breadsticks...and SUCCEEDED! It's a small victory, but I'll take it ;)

This week marks the final hurrah of my freezer meals, which means I will actually prepare dinners FRESH...but considering the baby will be 6 weeks old this week and this is the first time I've had to make dinner from scratch, that's pretty good! I'm officially hooked on the idea of OAMC now though - it's fantastic to be able to just pop something in the oven for supper, and well worth the extra effort. My sister in law is on board too - so you may see more OAMC cooking in my posts as we figure out a system! (as a sidebar, if you do OAMC or are interested, Once a Month Mom is hosting a big OAMC Tweet-up event at 6pm on October 10th...they'll be live in the Dayton, OH area but we long distance folks can participate via Stickam and Twitter! Check it out!)

Here's what we're dining on this week, don't forget to visit I'm an Organizing Junkie for HUNDREDS of other menus!

monday - Pizza Roll Ups, salad - OAMC ($6.00 for 8 servings)

tuesday - Obama's Chili, Bread bowls ($8.10 for 8-10 servings)

wednesday - Chicken Bombay, couscous, broccoli - OAMC ($8.85 for 6 servings)

thursday - Stuffed Zucchini, Wheat biscuits ($6.67 for 4 servings plus leftover biscuits)

friday - Chicken Pot Pie, leftover wheat biscuits - OAMC ($4.00 for 6 servings)

saturday - leftovers! FREE!

Frugal Family Fun

Frugality is like a fungus...it starts out small, then grows on you until it takes over!!

I started out my journey to frugality by focusing on my grocery spending, but the more I practice it at the supermarket, the more I find that the lessons learned apply in EVERY area of spending. I get as excited finding ways to save on unconventional things as I do when I pull a sale/store coupon/mfr coupon trifecta and get stuff for free :)

One of my new favorite ways to save on entertainment for my family comes from - wait for it - the library - and I'm not talking about books and movies! Most local libraries are given discount passes to area attractions, and some of those discounts are really impressive! In my area, we have the SAILS network of libraries, and I can go to just about any SAILS member library and get great discounted or free admission passes to tons of day trip destinations.

An example: yesterday, my husband and I took our toddler to the Boston Museum of Science. We reserved a library pass the day before, and the pass was good for a $5 admission price for up to 4 people...TEN BUCKS for a trip that would have normally cost us $26 per adult - so we saved $42! Including parking, the ride on the T and admission, the entire day cost us $27. Not too bad for a big-ticket attraction!!

Check with your local library, then start planning some day trips!

Exergen Temporal Artery Thermometer - Review and Giveaway! - CLOSED

I hate having to use a thermometer on my kids. Let's face it, there's nothing pleasant about having to put something....um...down there when your kid already feels miserable. And you can't tell an infant to stop flailing your legs, or this could get ugly.

Photobucket So I was THRILLED when given the chance to try out Exergen's Temporal Artery Thermometer! Their thermometer measures the body's core temperature from your temporal (forehead) artery. The results are as accurate as what you would normally get from a rectal temp. And because you are "scanning" the forehead, you can take your child's temperature even while they are sleeping!

The science behind it is pretty impressive:

"With a gentle stroke of the forehead it captures the naturally emitted heat from the skin over the temporal artery, taking 1,000 readings per second, selecting the most accurate. With its patented Arterial Heat Balance system the Temporal Scanner measures ambient temperatures, mathematically replaces the small temperature loss from cooling at the skin, and displays an accurate arterial temperature."

Temporal readings will be more accurate because the arterial temp reflects your body's true core temperature sooner than a rectal temperature, and a temporal scan isn't affected by movement (coughing, breathing, shifting position) as with traditional thermometers and ear scanners.

When I received my scanner, one thing impressed me - its simplicity. Single button operation, no disposable covers like with ear thermometers, and 2-second results mean that when I have a sick child and my nerves are frayed, I won't be fumbling with extra parts or waiting too long for results. We didn't have any illnesses in the house so we just had some fun testing it out on each other!

PhotobucketIt was incredibly easy to use - just place the sensor on the center of the forehead, press the scan button, and move the sensor over to the hairline, and your temperature immediately displays. I even sneaked into my toddler's room one night to test him while he was sleeping, he never stirred! I wanted to test the accuracy, so I used it on my squirmy infant right after taking a rectal temperature - it was accurate within 0.2 degrees and my baby was a LOT more comfortable during the scan!

Exergen's Temporal Artery Thermometers retail for about $49.99 and are available at Walgreens, Wal-Mart, Costco, Drugstore.com, Babies R Us/Toys R Us and http://www.baby.com/. But one of my lucky readers will win a scanner of their very own!

Mother knows b(r)e(a)st

I have officially been through the gauntlet.

Moms know that undeniable pull we feel to do the absolute best for our babies from the moment they arrive. But what happens when you have to choose between what should be best for your baby and what ends up best for your whole family's sense of balance?

I breastfed my toddler, and not without difficulty. We dealt with severe nipple injury from bad latching, poor milk supply, and marathon feeding sessions before finding our rhythm a little over 2 weeks in. Tears of frustration were a daily occurrence in the early days, but we pushed through and I ended up nursing him till he was 9 months old. I loved nursing, loved knowing he was getting the absolute best from me! And I knew that I wanted to breastfeed any siblings that followed.

We were recently blessed with a baby brother for my boy, and I had absolute confidence in my ability to breastfeed this new addition - I had overcome some serious hurdles with my older son, the second time around was bound to be easier!

Right?

Yeah, about that...

I left the hospital with my new baby and some really tough latching issues...within a week he had caused more severe nipple injuries than his brother. (Vigilon is my best friend!) Visits to the AMAZING lactation nurse at my hospital were unsuccessful in finding the right "trick" to get him to latch properly - he's incredibly stubborn and just doesn't like his mouth in the right nursing position. As the lactation nurse reminded me, it takes two to tango - and if one person doesn't want to dance, you can't force them. My precious baby, he's no dancer.

So I began the difficult task of pumping and feeding. When you have a baby that insists on eating every 2 hours, that is quite an undertaking. He takes about 20 minutes to eat, and then it takes me about 20 minutes to pump. If he were my only child, that would wear on me - with only an hour or so in between feedings to get ANYTHING done, my sanity was wearing thin.

But he's NOT my only child. He has a 2 1/2 year old sibling who adores his baby brother, but is pretty ticked off at his parents for introducing a new focus of our attention into the house. My adorable, well behaved toddler turned into a holy terror almost overnight. I suppose it's a perfect storm, when you combine a drastic family dynamic change with the onset of the Terrible Twos...add in the breastfeeding issues and I may as well be captain of the Andrea Doria. That precious hour between feeding/pumping was never enough to give time to my displaced toddler, my newborn, my house, my bladder, and my sanity. Big Brother would wait until I was tethered down by the pump or by attempts to re-introduce breastfeeding, and find trouble at a moment when getting up to discipline him would be extremely difficult. I felt like I was losing my balance, and none of us were very happy.

After many tearful phone calls to the lactation nurse and my mother-in-law, I had to come to a hard decision. Giving up breastfeeding made me feel like a failure, though the lactation nurse assured me I had done everything I could possibly do. I wanted to give my newborn the best...but with so many hurdles, he wasn't really getting the best of me, and neither was the rest of my family. I wanted to restore some balance to my house, and in my case, that meant moving away from breastfeeding and giving my baby boy formula. My mother-in-law reminded me of one important fact - these early days pass so quickly, and if moving away from breastfeeding was going to allow me to enjoy my little ones while they were still little, it was OK.

I did a wonderful thing today - my littlest man snuggled me and chowed down his bottle before settling in for a nap, and after 20 minutes of patience (a lifetime to a 2 year old) my big boy got almost an hour of uninterrupted mommy time. I got a much needed boost from time spent with each of my children. And everyone in the house is breathing a little easier.

I have still been working off my freezer meals and quick dinners, but the time is coming fast when I need to get back to my old cooking routines. Here's what we'll be eating, don't forget to visit I'm an Organizing Junkie for tons more menu ideas!

monday - leftover Cheesy Kielbasa Bake - OAMC - FREE

tuesday - Homemade Vegetable Soup, breadsticks - OAMC - ($4.27 for 6 servings)

wednesday - Spaghetti and freezer meatballs, leftover breadsticks - OAMC ($4.11 for 6-8 servings)

I finally got out to do some Target shopping, after getting wind of a few great deal scenarios from It's Hip to Save! I did pretty well considering it was a last-minute effort.

I didn't get the Special K bars deal, they were already sold out with no rainchecks - I also passed on the bigger 12-count pop tart boxes with the free milk (the coupons for Pop Tarts that I could print were for the smaller boxes not the big ones), and instead got the 8-count boxes for an absolute steal. Here's how it panned out:

Trans #1
Bought 5 Edy's Ice Cream 1.5 qt, on sale for $2.50
used 5 $1/1 Target printable coupons
Final Cost: $7.50
got a $5 Gift Card
Paid $7.50 OOP
saved $11.45 ($6.45 sale price, $5 coupons)

Trans #2
Bought 4 Special K Cereals, on sale for $2.39
Final Cost: $9.56
got a $5 GC
Paid $4.56 OOP
Used $5 GC from previous Transaction
saved $2.40 (sale price)

Trans #3
Bought 2 boxes Blueberry Muffin Pop Tarts (8-count), on sale for $1.46
Bought 1 bag Goldfish Grahams, on sale for $1.50
used 2 $0.75/1 Target Pop Tart printable coupons
used 2 $0.55/1 internet Pop Tart mfr printables
Final Cost: $1.82
used $5 GC from previous transaction
Paid $0.00 OOP
Saved $3.55 ($2.60 coupons, $0.95 sale price)

TOTAL OOP: $13.06
TOTAL SAVED: $17.40 (plus $3.18 remaining balance on my Gift Card!)
